"We came to the conclusion of this solemn exposition of the Shroud, the first of the third millennium. We wanted to organize this event to give opportunities to those who would come to revere life experience the gift that you receive when you enter the harmony of faith and prayer with the suffering of Christ. " These are the first words of the Archbishop of Turin, Cardinal Severino Poletto, during the solemn celebration this afternoon in the Cathedral which was attended by several bishops and many priests of Piemonte Torino along with the civil and military authorities and the President of the Organizing Committee Prof. . Fiorenzo Alfieri.
beginning of the Mass was read the message sent by Benedict XVI to the Archbishop.
Come to venerate the Shroud is an experience that invites contemplation, reflection in their lives. " "It was an incredible feeling: I still have chills - said Mrs. Robert Venturi exit - before the image of Man of Sorrows, I felt drained from my fears and my anxieties, I got a feeling of great peace and serenity. "
In the morning passed before the Shroud two thousand adults and 100 children of Sri Lanka, led by Bishop Mgr. Ranjith Malacom Peris and a group of youth players of Lokomotiv Moscow, for a tournament in Turin.
Among the guests today also Cherie Blair, wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair arrived for the fourth time on a visit to Turin, after the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in 2006. "I was very impressed with the towel - said after pausing in prayer among the pilgrims - an image that evokes both suffering and redemption." Mrs Blair said she was "particularly touched" by the prayer composed for the exposition by Cardinal Poletto, che per l’occasione è stata letta in inglese.
